When Fish receives the knife of the enemy soldiers it is a souvenir that says he's done something for his country. He has protected his country and the men around him. It shows that he had succeeded as one man and as one army. This is important for all that he has done and gives him hope for future experiences.

When fish held the knife in his hand he essentially realized that the enemy soldiers are similar to him. They all carry weapons in the hope of surviving this war and are just there following orders.

The enemy was germanic and part of the nazi culture. Fish, having a Jewish heritage, was moved by the knife as it was a symbol of the nazi germany movement and a memory of all the jews that died during the Holocaust which is personal to him.

So, the knife was not a knife; it was a symbol. That very short scene made me wonder if maybe he had family in Germany or Nazi-occupied territory and what it must have been like for a Jewish soldier to fight in WWII. . .

He cried because it was a Hitler youth knife which was being carried by a German boy that wasn't even old enough to fight but was killed because of his resebellingness as a German soldier

Fish cried when handed the hitler knife because he was reminded of his family that was lost by the nazis and him seeing that someone that might have been close to hitler has now been taken from him (the knife was most likely given to the soldier by hitler himself as a sign of gratitude) and that Fish can now avenge his family by slowing taking away from hitler

Mellish is jewish, hence him holding his star pendant after taking the knife, it was a symbol of the holocaust and the terror and evil that had killed millions of jews across Germany. Comments are closed.
